Mini Pies Are The Bomb

Hold on to your sprinkles, kids! You'd better get your fill of cupcakes quick because this fall they're going to get the crumbs kicked out of them by a whole gang of snarky little tarts. Yesireee, pies are the new cupcake!

The rules are similar to the cake pop trend, mini is magnificent, only this time around bite-size is out and pint-size seems to be the right size. Portable is practical and the word on the street is that savory and sweet are equally fun to eat. Finally, last, but never least, cuteness counts!

Got it? Good! For those of you who were too busy hoarding cupcakes to take notes, you can read all about it later. Good gravy, there are a ton of pie cookbooks being released in the months ahead! Prepare your rolling pins for action because it looks like the recipes for party pies are just going to keep on coming.

So here's what's new:

Handheld Pies: Pint-Sized Sweets and Savories

Handheld Pies: Pint-Sized Sweets and Savories - Okay, while still completely charming and totally adorable, the pies in this book look a bit more rustic which makes me think that they're going to win over the hearts of many men. And, yes, I dare say I spotted another piejar! Oh, my, are those homemade poptarts...squee!!

Mini Pies: Adorable and Delicious Recipes for Your Favorite Treats

Boozy Baking

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit of a klutz in the kitchen, so spilling a little wine in the sauce isn't totally out of the question, but aside from jello shooters I'd never really given booze in food much thought until I was researching cake in a jar recipes and stumbled across this whisky cake. From the moment I laid eyes on that tempting creation I knew that this was in idea that required further investigation.

It all makes perfect sense, really. A key ingredient in most baked goods is pure vanilla extract, which is nothing more than deliciously flavored alcohol. Although it smells like heaven, it doesn't taste great on it's own, but the flavor is oh so wonderful when baked in a batter of gooey goodness.

The Boozy Baker: 75 Recipes for Spirited Sweets

Now, I knew that my sister would be all over this idea too, (because she's great cook and caters most of our family gatherings, -not because she's a lush), so I was kind of giddy when I found The Boozy Baker cookbook just in time for Mother's Day. I wrapped it up pretty with a bow and paired it with a fancy bottle of vodka. She LOVED it! The book is loaded with mouthwatering recipes for spirited sweets, some of which even include recipe for drinks that compliment the dessert recipes perfectly. Brilliant! (I am a sucker for recipe ideas that make me look awesome.) As we thumbed through the pages together, the full-color photos and flavor combinations were enough to make our heads spin, but the Dirty Girl Scout recipe near the back of the book inspired an emergency shopping list and a quick trip to the liquor store. YUM!

Desserts made with alcohol are best served a day or two after baking, so they make lovely make-ahead additions to the menu at any grown-up get together such as a bachelor/bachelorette party or wedding, but you don't really need a special ocassion to bake with booze! A romantic dinner for two or a movie night at home with the girls is reason enough to celebrate with a cocktail cake.

Cheers. :)

Retro Recipe Roundup - Mason Jar Cakes

If your party theme took a spin in the time machine, you might be hungry for some retro SWEET treats sprinkled with vintage charm. Nothing brings more character to the kitchen table than good old fashioned mason jars, so surprise your guests by serving your party cakes sealed inside, -just like grandma's gooseberry jam!

Mason jar cakes are perfectly portable, totally adorable and can be made days in advance, but don't be fooled by their simple style because the self contained jars are a wonderful way to bake in ooey gooey layers, textures and even a rainbow of colors. We found oodles of gourmet recipes that will please everyone from Tabitha who's turning two to the blushing bride and her new vegan nephew!

Stack 'em up pretty or pack 'em up for a party on-the-go! Dress 'em with custom labels, ribbons and bows!

Send some to your son who is far away. Make one for mom on Mother's Day and two for dad on Father's Day. Bribe your teachers or your boss!

Can't wait? Even Miss Manners would advise you not to wait for a special occasion to bake a batch of these little lovelies. They are ideal for picnics and packed lunches too!

We like to eat 'em right out of the jar, so the pint or half-pint size are ideal depending on your appetite. The itsy-bitsy 4 oz. jelly jars should be just right for tiny tots! The canning jars will cost you about $7-10 a dozen unless you raid aunt Sally's secret stash or are lucky enough to find 'em at a thrift store or yard sale.

You'll want to have a nice big cookie sheet ready to bake 'em on and be careful not to overfill the jars if you're planning to put lids on!

Sterilize your seals and lids in boiling water while your cakes are cooking, then screw the (hot) lids on loosely while your cakes are still hot out of the oven and you'll get a nice airtight vacuum seal, -just wait a few minutes for the popping sound and you'll know it worked!

For safety's sake, it's probably best to store your cakes in the refrigerator until you're ready to eat or serve them. They should stay fresh for 3-10 days depending on the recipe and vacuum sealing will probably buy you a few extra days.

Once you've baked your cakes, you can get a little crazy in your craft corner and decorate the heck out of 'em. Wrap a ribbon around the rim or attach a fork with simple string. Stickers and tags can be personalized to match your party theme for edible take home favors and gifts.

Here are a few of our favorite cake in a jar recipes. ENJOY!
